Gain Skills for Independent Living

No matter your current skill or comfort level with technology, VisionLink supports the development of practical skills that can enhance learning, communication, and engagement in everyday life.

We offer personal and group instruction in Assistive Technology, Orientation and Mobility (O&M), and Vision Rehabilitation Therapy (VRT). Assistive Technology courses develop your proficiency with iPhones, iPads and devices such as Amazon Alexa, Google Home, and computers to access an array of voice-activated apps that assist with independent living. We provide individualized O&M or white cane training in the community. VRT instructors teach non-visual skills in areas such as meal preparation, home management, shopping, handling currency, and identifying medications.

Are you managing a recent diagnosis or experiencing a sudden change in vision?

We can help you with your next steps. Provide some general information and we will follow up with you.

Access Technology Classes

Our in-person and online classes aim to help you connect to the digital world and to get the most out of your computer, tablet, and smartphone. Learn these skills on a step-by-step basis at your own pace, and work individually with a tutor or in group classes. Our classes will expand your ability to live independently and use the internet, and increase your proficiency in digital communication and information access, using the latest applications.

Whether you seek introductory classes or advanced learning, we provide instruction for:

  • Making the most of Apple’s iOS or Windows mobile operating systems
  • Using accessible software like the JAWS screen reader, NVDA, Apple VoiceOver, ZoomText magnification, and Optical Character Recognition
  • Navigating a keyboard, using email, and accessing the internet
  • Using Braille displays
  • Working with Microsoft Suite and other software

With our classes, you will get the most out of the assistive devices you already have, and be confident to access technology and the digital environment. If you are in need of a new device, you may be eligible to obtain one through our Philadelphia Lighthouse of the Blind program, which can provide funding for eligible individuals.

“My client’s journey of empowerment is truly remarkable. While they were initially reliant on others for daily essentials, their determination to learn and adapt led them to master the intricacies of the iPhone. With an iPhone in hand, they have not just embraced technology, but have unlocked a world of possibilities and freedoms.”

Orientation and Mobility Training

These classes help you gain the sense of freedom that traveling with a white cane can provide. O&M classes provide one-on-one instruction with skilled trainers according to your individual goals and abilities. Exercises with peers build skills and techniques you can use at home, out in the community, or at work. You will learn ways to increase awareness of your surroundings, which provide the cues and information you need when you are on-the-go. You will also learn how to navigate the regional public transportation system so you can travel where and when you want. Gain confidence and proficiency in independent mobility, leading to a measurable reduction in fall risk, greater participation in daily activities, and improved access to healthcare and community resources.

“I’ve only been with VisionLink for a month, but I’ve already learned to walk more safely and confidently and feel more at ease in the kitchen… thank you to everyone at VisionLink. You are passionate and supportive, and because of you, I finally feel like I have the tools to lead a joyful life.”
