Welcome to a special December edition of Connections, ASB’s participant newsletter! Check out these virtual and in-person events to keep busy and spread some joy as it gets colder this holiday season!

Virtual December Events

TODAY: Online Shopping with Accessibility in Mind

Date: Tuesday, December 7 from 6 – 7:30 p.m.

Get ready for the holidays with tips and techniques for making online shopping more accessible. The New York Public Library is hosting an online event that will cover comparison-shopping on Amazon and Google Shopping, navigating shopping sites with varying levels of accessibility, and where to find accessible products. Join this online session with the Zoom link above. 

FRIDAY: AARP NY Game Show Series – December’s Topic is Fraud

Date: Friday, December 10 at 6 p.m.

Join AARP NY for its fun and interactive game show series where AARP volunteers will compete to share their knowledge on various topics. December’s topic will cover fraud. Sign up for December’s session with the link above, and you can email with any questions.

SATURDAY: NYC Violin Studio’s Winter Concert

Date: Saturday, December 11 from 2:30 – 4 p.m.

The NYC Violin Studio’s Winter Concert will include solos, duets and group performances, played live together for the first time in more than a year! On top of that, you’ll also get to enjoy a bonus musical performance from the NYC Violin Studio teachers. Enjoy the concert on Zoom. DECEMBER 13: Accessible Origami Online

Date: Monday, December 13 from 6 – 7:30 p.m.

Join the New York Public Library online as it uses verbal descriptions to help you make origami models from home! No experience is required, but you’ll need standard notebook paper or origami paper. Use the Zoom link above to join on December 13.

DECEMBER 15: Family Forum with Vision for Equality of Philadelphia

Date: Wednesday, December 15 from 6:30 – 7:30 p.m.

Join the PA Family Network advisors, families and individuals living with disabilities for our Zoom Family Forum to cover the following topics below. 

  • Discuss experiences and the impact of COVID-19 on our lives.
  • Network with other families and ask questions.
  • Get the latest updates from the Office of Developmental Programs.

In-Person December Events

DECEMBER 11: Butters and Brunch Christmas Pop-Up Shop 

Date: Saturday, December 11 from 11 a.m. – 7 p.m.
Location: Our House Culture Center, 6380 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, PA 

Stop by this event to soak up the Christmas spirit while also supporting local businesses! This free, in-person event will take place at the Our House Cultural Center, located at 6380 Germantown Avenue and will feature both food and shopping vendors. To attend this event, participants must register with the link above for free. 

DECEMBER 13: Five Christmases with Charles Dickens

Date: Monday, December 13 at 7 p.m.
Location: 1901 Vine Street 3rd Floor, Philadelphia, PA

The Rare Book Department of the Free Library of Philadelphia is inviting individuals to celebrate Five Christmases with Dickens! This free event will feature rarely seen, one-of-a-kind works connected to Christmas and Charles Dickens. Some of the works that will be mentioned include “A Christmas Carol,” “The Chimes,” “The Cricket On The Hearth” and more! For this event, you must register before attending, as there is a limited number of spots per the COVID-19 protocol.

DECEMBER 18: Philly Christmas Walk 

Date: Saturday, December 18 from 2 – 7:30 p.m.
Location: Love Park (across from Suburban Station), 16th and JFK Blvd, Philadelphia, PA

Beginning at Love Park at Suburban Station, this guided walking tour around Philadelphia features beautiful Christmas displays including Wanamaker’s Light Show, Dickens Christmas Village, Franklin Square Light Show, Dilworth German Christmas Market and more!
