VisionLink Program Schedule: July- September 2022

Education and Training Programs

iPhone Instruction

Remote Beginner and Advanced iPhone are offered in a small group setting. iPhone instruction will teach the basic skills for using your phone with Voiceover and gestures.

Students will be scheduled either for Monday & Thursday, Tuesday & Thursday, or Tuesday & Friday lessons. Lesson times, start dates, and end dates will be set directly with the instructor. There is a waiting list for this program, meaning you may not be able to start right away.


iOS VoiceOver Accessible App Workshops – July 26 through September 1, 2022

A variety of iPhone App Workshops will be offered throughout the year in a small group setting. All interested VisionLink participants are welcome to attend. No iPhone experience is necessary, just an interest in using an iPhone with apps that can change your life.

Please Note: There will be a student app workshop break August 16, 17, and 18. All App Workshop classes will resume the following week. This break is only for the iPhone App workshops. All other VisionLink activities will continue as scheduled.

  • Seeing AI and TapTapSee: Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m. from July 26 to August 30
    • Learn how to independently read mail and printed documents, scan barcodes, use facial recognition, identify money, and more!
  • Instacart: Wednesdays at 10 a.m. from July 27 to August 31
    • Learn how to shop online and have groceries delivered right to your front door!
  • Participant’s choice! App Q&A: Wednesdays at 11:15 a.m. from July 27 to August 31
    • Want to learn about different apps? Looking for a quick app overview? Have iPhone app questions? Then, this workshop is for you. 
  • Lyft: Thursdays at 11:30 a.m. from July 28 to September 1
    • Schedule a ride anytime, to anywhere, and for any reason you desire!

Orientation without Mobility

This class will enable the participant to learn to mentally map a route to and from any destination within the city using compass directions. While walking or using public transit this knowledge will enable a person, sighted or not, to maintain their direction and recover any misdirection they make.

Orientation without Mobility is currently operating remotely. Lesson times, start dates, and end dates will be set directly with the instructor. There is a waiting list for this program, so you may not be able to start right away depending on the instructor’s availability. 


Home Management

Home management workshops are group sessions where participants will discuss strategies and learn techniques to live more independently. Each workshop will focus on a specific topic area of home management. We are currently ensuring that those participants who initially expressed an interest in the program over the last two years will be contacted. We will let you know as soon as we can accept new participants for this program. Meanwhile, you are welcome to add your name to the waiting list.


Computer Instruction

Computer instruction teaches the basic skills for using a computer with JAWS or works to sharpen skills in the advanced class. We are happy to announce that the computer instruction program will begin in the coming weeks. We are currently ensuring that those participants who initially expressed an interest in the program over the last two years will be contacted. Community-Based Programming

Mondays

  • Men’s Peer Support Group (starting in August) from 11:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Are you having difficulty talking with friends and family about your loss of vision? Join this group and share thoughts and ideas with peers. 
  • New Participant Orientation (requires registration in advance) from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.: The group meets six times over the course of three weeks, with a new group forming each month.

Tuesdays

  • Movement with the PA Ballet (meets weekly through 7/5/22, next group starts in September) from 10:30 – 11:30 p.m.: These remote workshops will focus on the physical technique and artistry of ballet and movement. Attendees will be encouraged to tell their stories through movement, promoting the idea that communication need not be verbal or visual. You will also learn about the physical health benefits that consistent movement has on the body and mind.
  • Diabetes Information and Support Group (meets weekly from 8/30/22 – 11/15/22) from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.: Led by Thomas Jefferson University staff and pharmacy students, this group will help you learn about ways to manage your diabetes, how this disease affects your body, and how to eat sensibly and still enjoy what you are eating.

Wednesdays

  • Gentle Yoga (meets weekly from 7/13/22 – 8/31/22) from 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.: Get your body moving with this weekly program! No previous experience required and experienced Yogi’s are welcome.
  • New Participant Orientation (requires registration in advance) from 1:30 – 2:30 p.m.: The group meets six times over the course of three weeks, with a new group forming each month.

Thursdays

  • Women’s Peer Support Group (meets weekly until 5/5/22, next group forming from 5/26/22 – 6/30/22) from 10 – 11 a.m.: Join this group to discuss issues facing women who are blind or experiencing vision loss.
  • Intro to Opera *NEW* (meets on the third Thursday of every month) from 5:00 – 6:00 p.m.:
    • 7/21/22 – Join Opera Philadelphia Manager of Audience Development Steven Humes and Audio Describer Nicole Sardella for the first in a series of events that previews Opera Philadelphia’s upcoming fall Festival O22 (9/21/22 – 10/2/22). This session will dive into Rossini’s opera “Otello” and the production set to premiere in the Academy of Music.
    • 8/18/22 – Opera Philadelphia’s preview of Festival O22 continues with a glimpse into Toshio Hosokawa’s opera “The Raven,” composed in 2012. Learn about this exciting new production coming to Philadelphia and how the creators transformed Edgar Allan Poe’s chilling monodrama for the operatic stage.
    • 9/15/22 – Opera Philadelphia’s preview of Festival O22 concludes with an introduction to David T. Little’s “Black Lodge,” an industrial rock opera concert set to have its world premiere at the Philadelphia Film Center. Learn about this unique operatic experience and other events scheduled to arrive in Philadelphia this fall.

Fridays

  • Monthly Resource Sharing Call (meets on the first Friday of every month) from 2:00 – 3:30 p.m.: Join VisionLink staff to learn about new programs, resources available, and special announcements. Bring any new resources you have learned about to the call as well to share with other participants.
  • Speaker Series (meets on the fourth Friday of every month) from 10:00 a.m. – 12 p.m.: VisionLink welcomes professionals from health and other fields to speak to our participants about topics that are important to health and welfare, finance, legal assistance, and much more!
